Dr. Skrien breaks down what he does in the clinic each week, sharing real insights and tips to help you better understand your care.
Dr. Parrish Skrien explains how chiropractic care with the Gonstead Chiropractic Technique
0:08
good morning everybody today I just want
0:09
to talk a little bit about you what is
0:12
chiropractic care so what I'm going to
0:15
read off here is actually the statute in
0:17
Minnesota and what it reads is
0:19
chiropractic means the healthc care
0:20
discipline that recognizes the innate
0:23
recuperative power of the body to heal
0:25
itself without the use of drugs or
0:28
surgery by def identifying and caring
0:31
for vertebral subluxations and other
0:34
abnor articulations by emphasizing the
0:37
relationship between structure and
0:39
function as coordinated by the nervous
0:41
system and how that relationship affects
0:44
the perseverance and restoration of the
0:46
health so a lot of big words in there
0:49
and what does that mean and how do we do
0:50
that here in Scrin Chiropractic Clinic
0:54
well for me personally I was helped
0:57
through chiropractic care as I noted in
1:00
a previous video uh arm and leg had gone
1:03
numb had headaches kind of always
1:06
struggled with attention deficits my
1:08
immune system was knocked down but we
1:10
found a chiropractor that did the
1:12
Gonstead system of chiropractic so today
1:15
I'm going to spend a little bit of time
1:16
about that and how I got trained in it
1:19
and what's it entailing um Dr godstead
1:23
he developed this technique years ago
1:26
and he had a system that he used in
1:31
order to find these vertebral
1:33
subluxations so we'll kind of go through
1:35
all of that with you in a little bit now
1:39
for myself I got training actually by Dr
1:42
proxil at the Troxel Chiropractic Clinic
1:45
and down in
1:47
1993 I was an intern there and what was
1:51
involved is that we ran classes for
1:54
other students and in order to do that
1:56
we had to take those classes to start
1:58
with and this was on top of our
2:00
schoolwork and we would do this after
2:02
school before school and we had to pass
2:08
some tests and once we took those tests
2:09
we got interviewed by Dr trox if
2:11
accepted we could be in the intern
2:13
program and we got to teach the other
2:15
students plus got to follow him around
2:17
in his clinic and kind of be the exam
2:19
doctor so we got to be hands on learn
2:22
how to find and take x-rays uh how to
2:26
use surface EMGs and just how to operate
2:29
the clinic it was a very valuable
2:31
service and I know I came out being a
2:34
good adjuster understanding how the body
2:37
worked and how chiropractic could
2:39
actually help people in their health now
2:41
besides being an intern I also took a
2:44
number of seminars in the advanced
2:46
Johnstead system and I was recognized in
2:49
1993 before I even graduated that I had
2:52
completed the prescribed studies that
2:55
worked on for the Gonstead system of
2:57
chiropractic i had um got this award
3:01
right before I graduated graduated in
3:03
July of
3:05
1993 so what are the processes that as a
3:08
GSTA doctor that I'm looking for when
3:10
I'm treating a patient first off we're
3:13
going to do a detailed history we want
3:15
to find out what's bringing our patients
3:17
in what symptoms they have and that way
3:21
that's going to help us kind of hone in
3:23
on where we're going to want to look as
3:25
far as where these subluxations are
3:28
so as you can see on this chart it does
3:30
a good job in showing you know we've got
3:32
the spine back down in here but then if
3:35
we follow it over here you can see the
3:37
different areas how it's going to affect
3:39
our body and then over here kind of the
3:42
symptoms that our patients can be coming
3:45
in so that way we can show the patients
3:48
you know is out how is it going to
3:50
affect their body now also we can see on
3:54
this you got the nerves here and not
3:57
only do they go you know and cause pain
4:00
but it can affect your nervous system
4:02
and how it affects your body your heart
4:05
your lung your intestines of health care
4:08
and how can we remove that interference
4:10
to allow the body to work the way it
4:13
should now one of the steps that we're
4:15
going to do that to help locate that is
4:17
we'll take X-rays the X-rays it's going
4:20
to allow us to see you know any
4:23
misalignments in the body if the curves
4:25
aren't the way they should be how thick
4:28
the discs are if there's damage being
4:31
done to those that we're going to do
4:34
then we also want to do
4:36
instrumentation now in the Godstead
4:38
system we use a
4:41
nervoscope and this little device here
4:45
will run down the back of the spine
4:49
coming down and through there and it
4:52
just helps us where there can be some
4:54
nerve interference now besides that I
4:57
also do a couple scans and I'll show you
5:00
the instrument in just a minute here i'm
5:02
going to pause the vid so here I am i'm
5:04
back in my exam room and in the exam
5:06
room I actually a computer system and
5:10
what this is it's got actually a couple
5:11
different sensors that will roll one is
5:14
a temperature sensor and then one's a
5:17
surface EMG now these are going to give
5:20
me some readings it's going to show me
5:21
how the nervous system is working if
5:23
it's outside the normals if there's
5:25
imbalance going back and forth how the
5:28
temperature is affecting getting
5:30
affected and lets me get information on
5:33
the nervous system now some patients uh
5:36
we have to document for accidents and
5:38
stuff like that so we've got
5:39
computerized range of motion compare
5:41
them to a normal compare them as we're
5:43
progressing through getting that range
5:45
of motion back we've got our X-ray
5:47
machine right here and it's a digital m
5:51
able to develop the X-rays and get them
5:54
developed and it comes right over into
5:56
the computer over here and computer
5:59
screen within a few seconds and we can
6:01
start to take hey everybody I'm back and
6:05
what I want to explain next is kind of
6:07
when the patients come in on each visit
6:09
we're going to be checking a couple
6:10
other things i'm going to watch how
6:12
they're walking we're check their
6:13
visualization see if there's any
6:16
imbalances in the level like the ears
6:18
the shoulders the hips how are they
6:21
walking do they have a toe in a toe out
6:24
um is there problems with the knees and
6:27
then also we're going to do some static
6:29
palpation where we're going to be able
6:30
to see the skin in the back see if
6:33
there's any swelling some edema
6:36
uh any areas on the skin that look a
6:40
little bit different maybe they got some
6:42
pimples along some areas maybe there's a
6:44
rash in some area but just anything
6:47
that'll visually give us a tone that hey
6:48
that nervous system's under attack next
6:51
thing I'm going to look for is we're
6:52
going to do some stat mo motion
6:55
palpation and I'm going to be moving the
6:57
patients back and forth going to be
6:59
feeling for the tone of the muscles
7:01
we're going to see if there's any
7:02
swelling see if there's any restriction
7:04
of motion and how that is on each level
7:07
of the vertebraes after we've done our
7:09
scoping so we know where to pinpoint
7:11
that way it's going to help us find
7:13
where that subluxation is then we'll
7:15
correlate it see what it is if it's
7:17
correlating with what we're seeing on
7:18
x-rays and then we'll go ahead and give
7:20
the patients the adjustment the
7:22
treatments for the day then kind of
7:24
explain to them hey what to expect what
7:26
the next steps are and when we'll see
7:28
them again so hopefully that's a little
7:30
bit helpful you understand a little bit
7:31
more about the Gonstead system and how
7:34
we treat our patients here and we
7:36
hopefully see you
